NASTC SLEEP APNEA SOLUTION
We just got back from the Great American Truck Show in Dallas and as always I’d like to thank all our friends who took the time to stop by our NASTC booth at the show. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in Nashville at our Annual NASTC Convention in November.
The FMCSA is moving forward with putting rules and regulations in place concerning the medical qualifications of CDL drivers with moderate to severe sleep apnea. Just so you know, the FMCSA Medical Review Board continues to move forward as the apnea issue has taken a backseat to the ELD mandate that is currently front and center and in the spotlight.
Their preliminary recommendations, which have not yet been approved, encourage the FMCSA to require a trucker to be screened for sleep apnea if he or she:
(1) has a body mass index greater than or equal to 40, or
(2) has a body mass index greater than or equal to 33 and meets at least three of the following criteria:
⦁ Is 42 or older
⦁ Is male
⦁ Is a postmenopausal female
⦁ Has diabetes
⦁ Has high blood pressure
⦁ Has a neck size greater than 17 inches (males) or 15.5 inches (females)
⦁ Has a history of heart disease
⦁ Snores loudly
⦁ Has had witnessed apneas
⦁ Has a small airway to the lungs
⦁ Has untreated hypothyroidism
⦁ Has micrognathia
(undersized jaw) or retrognathia (clinical terminology for a kind of overbite)
Our goal is to help you and your company retain your ‘Million Mile Drivers’.
The NASTC Sleep Apnea Program starts with screening your drivers well in advance of their DOT Medical Card recertification date. Our program is completely confidential and the results of any screening tests done in our program will only be reported back to your driver. We can also help any of your drivers who are currently on CPAP therapy so they too are prepared for their DOT recertification. Our NASTC ‘Driver Portfolio’ is a valuable and maybe even a lifesaving addition to help your drivers keep their medical records organized throughout the year for their DOT recertification.
